  1. Good example of how trees in natural forests often develop in a clumpy pattern. FS thinning prescriptions too often focus on spacing individual trees, instead of clumps of trees.

    • Actually, here in California, we do, indeed, decide to leave clumps of old growth habitats, within cutting units, intact and untouched. When single trees have joined roots, it is policy to either cut both trees, or leave both trees, due to root rot issues. It s easy enough to criticize someone’s choices on individual trees but, it is much harder to judge an overall thinning unit, as a whole.
