Stanislaus RoD on SERAL 2 Project

Nick Smith has a link in his email today about this.

The U.S. Forest Service has released Stanislaus National Forest Supervisor Jason Kuiken’s written decision for management of 110,000 acres of Forest Service lands in the Griswold Creek, Middle Fork Stanislaus, and South Fork Stanislaus watersheds.

Kuiken has approved most of the proposed actions for the project, which the Forest Service calls Social and Ecological Resilience Across the Landscape 2.0 — SERAL 2.0 for short.

The project docs are here. We discussed SERAL earlier this year. At that time, no litigation had been filed. Sharon had a link to this storymap on the project — great photos.

Will be interesting to see if that changes. Some of the project involves thinning in mature and old-growth stands, so some folks may make the usual “logging in old-growth forests!” claim.

  1. Yes, isn’t it odd that we see claims of ‘save the last remaining 3% of our old growth!’, but it seems like every project has old growth in it. More word games designed to make the public think the USFS is still in the 80s, in the Sierra Nevada.

I have worked on most of the Sierra Nevada National Forests and seen abundant old growth trees. Of course, they continue to be protected by the 30 inch diameter CASPO rules, and I don’t see any legitimate push to change that for “logging” projects. With the Chief coming from Region 5, I doubt we’ll see any changes during his tenure. (The fearmongerers will point at Trump, though. I really doubt that he can change much in Region 5, within any time scheme.)
