One of our Anonymous friends asked this question and provided a link to the Interior Budget Justification 2026 for the US Wildland Fire Service (should abbreviations for different agencies within the same department be so similar, e.g. USFWS and USWFS- could this lead to confusion)?.

I’m not good with budget documents, but perhaps what is missing is the FS budget from 2024 and 2025 that is expected to be included in the 6.5 bill in the USWFS 2026 budget request?

U.S. Wildland Fire Service (USWFS) $3.7B consolidates all wildland fire bureau services from the BIA, BLM, FWS and NPS and the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The allocation also provides for permanent pay increase for U.S. Federal and Tribal wildland firefighters nationwide including temporary and seasonal employees and for the new incident response premium pay for all responders.
Relatively major changes ahead – for all agencies – as we learn more about “streamlining” and each of the approved budget components (aviation, preparedness, fuels management, etc.).

Unprecedented changes ahead – for all agencies – as we learn more about “streamlining” and each of the approved budget components (aviation, preparedness, fuels management, etc.). DOI Office of Wildland Fire will be completely re-organized to serve as the USWFS National Office, both in DC and Boise. GACC boundaries will serve as the new Regional boundaries within the USWFS. And stay tuned for Fire Planning Units (FPUs) Version 2.0 for operations, response, planning, and preparedness at the local level.
And let’s watch for how FPUs are “integrated” with and or “consistent” with multiple uses in forest plans, as required by the National Forest Management Act.
Congress is presently working on drafting and passing individual appropriations bills for different parts of the government. However, both the USDA Forest Service and the Department of Interior FY2026 Budget Justifications provide a blueprint for creation of the US Wildland Fire Service. While there will likely be some changes before it is all said and done, the Republican majority in the Senate and the House is likely to pass an appropriation bill that is aligned with the President’s Budget Request, as outlined in the Justification documents for DOI and USDA.

I had not seen, and this is encouraging news. For a host of reasons, I do not think a single federal wildland fire service is the preferred option at this point in time. Leave the wildland fire program, as is, while the agencies sort through the budget reductions, workforce reductions, and stack of Executive Orders. I will continue to monitor. We will see as it emerges from committee to appropriations bill.
